The range temptation behind a tank of oil
Jul 03, 2024
Recently, authoritative experts and industry insiders have pointed out that plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (hereinafter referred to as "plug-in hybrids") are undergoing a revolution. The battery capacity has increased significantly, and the fuel tank capacity is gradually approaching or even surpassing that of traditional fuel vehicles. As a result, these models can easily achieve a driving range of 2000km, and this change has become a new focus of fierce competition in the industry.
Despite the outstanding performance of plug-in hybrid models in the past two years, which quickly became an important part of the new energy vehicle market, the following problems cannot be ignored. With the increasing volume and weight of the battery and fuel tank, although it gives the vehicle a longer driving range and higher freedom, it also makes people worry whether we are deviating from the correct direction and the original intention of design in the pursuit of energy saving and emission reduction.
In March, Dongfeng Motor released the Dongfeng Mach Electric Hybrid PHREV technology and simultaneously showcased the first plug-in hybrid SUV equipped with this technology - the Fengshen L7. According to official information, this model is equipped with a 30.2kWh power battery, with an impressive pure electric range of 205km, and the fuel consumption in power loss is 3.8L/100km (based on the NEDC standard), while the comprehensive fuel consumption is only 0.56L/100km (based on the WLTC standard). What's more exciting is that the Fengshen L7 can achieve a super long driving range of up to 1500km in full oil and full electricity.
For further verification of its range limit, Dongfeng Fengshen L7 launched a challenge across the network in April, aiming to reach the limit of 205km pure electric range. Surprisingly, after actual measurement, the pure electric range limit of Fengshen L7 reached 320km. After 40 hours of continuous live broadcast under different road conditions such as highways and urban roads, this model made a sprint towards the goal of 2000km comprehensive driving range with full oil and full electricity, and finally achieved a driving range of more than 2000km, reaching an astonishing 2054km, becoming the first plug-in hybrid SUV in China to break through the super long driving range of 2000km.
At the same time, the new energy giant BYD also released the Qin L DM-i sedan equipped with the fifth-generation DM technology in May. According to official data, the Qin L DM-i has a fuel consumption of only 2.9L/100km under the NEDC standard, and the comprehensive driving range with full oil and full electricity is as high as 2100km. The actual measurement results show that the fuel consumption of Qin L DM-i is only 3.37L/100km, and the cost per kilometer is only 0.27 yuan, which is not only lower than the same level of new energy vehicles, but also far lower than traditional fuel vehicles. For daily commuting, the driving range of Qin L DM-i can support more than two months without charging, greatly reducing the user's car usage cost.
It is a fact that Dongfeng and BYD are not the earliest car companies to publicize a driving range of more than 2000km. As early as 2022, the second-generation GS8 plug-in hybrid version of GAC Trumpchi claimed to achieve a super long driving range of more than 2000km. In 2023, Honda Accord e: PHEV and Hao Ying e: PHEV also joined this team, achieving a super long driving range of about 2000km.
Compared with the driving range of several hundred kilometers of pure electric, the driving range of plug-in hybrid models has reached a new height. 2024 will be a year when models with a driving range of more than 2000km are concentrated. In addition to the Qin L DM-i and Dongfeng Fengshen L7 that have been released, Chery Fengyun A8 Far Voyage Edition, Geely's models and others are also about to be released, leading this new trend in the new energy vehicle market.
For consumers, a driving range of 2000km is undoubtedly a great gospel. At present, pure electric cars still find it difficult to meet the needs of long-distance travel in terms of driving range, and the construction of charging piles and other infrastructure is also facing problems such as imperfect layout, unreasonable structure, unbalanced services, and irregular operations. Plug-in hybrid, range-extended and other hybrid models can not only solve the range anxiety but also save consumers' usage costs through two ways of charging and refueling, so they are highly praised. Data from the China Automobile Manufacturers Association shows that in the first four months of this year, the sales volume of new energy vehicles reached 2.94 million, a year-on-year increase of 32.3%. Among them, the sales growth rate of plug-in hybrid models reached as high as 84.5%, becoming a new growth momentum in the new energy market.
