National Motor Vehicle Statistics - First Half of 2024

According to the Ministry of Public Security, as of the end of June 2024, the total number of motor vehicles in China reached 440 million, including 345 million cars and 24.72 million new energy vehicles. The number of motor vehicle drivers is 532 million, with 496 million car drivers.

In the first half of 2024, 16.8 million new motor vehicles were registered, with 12.42 million being cars, a year-on-year increase of 5.70%. The new energy vehicle stock reached 24.72 million, accounting for 7.18% of the total number of cars. Among them, the stock of pure electric vehicles was 18.134 million, accounting for 73.35% of the total new energy vehicles. In the first half of the year, 4.397 million new energy vehicles were newly registered, a year-on-year increase of 39.41%, setting a historical record. The number of newly registered new energy vehicles accounted for 35.41% of the newly registered car volume.

By the end of June, there are 96 cities in China with more than 1 million cars, an increase of 8 cities year-on-year, with 43 cities having more than 2 million cars and 26 cities having more than 3 million cars. Among them, Chengdu, Beijing, and Chongqing have more than 6 million cars each, while Shanghai, Suzhou, and Zhengzhou have more than 5 million cars each.

The number of car transfer registrations continues to grow, and the second-hand car market is active. In the first half of 2024, a total of 17.52 million motor vehicle transfer registration services were handled nationwide. Among them, 16.26 million car transfer registration services were handled, a year-on-year increase of 53.79%. The reform measures for the second-hand car transfer registration business across different regions have significantly facilitated the handling of business for the public and enterprises and promoted the circulation of second-hand cars.

As of the end of June, the number of motor vehicle drivers in the country reached 532 million, of which the number of car drivers is 496 million, accounting for 93.17% of the total number of drivers. In the first half of 2024, 13.97 million new drivers obtained licenses, a year-on-year increase of 17.36%.

Online handling of vehicle and driver's license business reached 53.07 million transactions in the first half of 2024. Public security traffic management departments across the country actively promoted the online handling of traffic management services such as replacement and reissuance of licenses and plates, making it possible to handle these services "without leaving home".
