Jaguar Land Rover Buys V8 Engines from BMW for Its Luxury SUVs

It is well known that Jaguar Land Rover, a British car company, has been on a downward trend in recent years, much like its country. However, as the saying goes, "Even a broken ship has three thousand nails," what can Jaguar Land Rover still bring to the luxury car field?
Up to this year's Land Rover Defender OCTA, in this high-performance luxury off-road vehicle, Jaguar Land Rover surprisingly couldn't produce a decent high-power V8 engine and had to purchase from German BMW to equip its own vehicles. It is only now that we truly see the predicament of the brand and the British automotive industry system.
In fact, as early as the new Range Rover SV launched in 2022, Jaguar Land Rover began to use the N63 4.4T V8 twin-turbocharged engine provided by German BMW. The latter was even unwilling to provide its more advanced S63 engine, but a more basic N63 model, and Jaguar Land Rover then modified and re-tuned this N63 on the basis, changing the engine cover to become the engine of Range Rover SV and Defender OCTA.
On the Defender OCTA, this 4.4T V8 twin-turbocharged engine provided by BMW also integrates a 48V light hybrid system, with a maximum power of 635 horsepower and a maximum torque of 750 Nm (which can be increased to 800 Nm in sports mode), equipped with an 8AT gearbox and a four-wheel drive system, with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 4.0 seconds, plus 22-inch alloy wheels and all-season tires, with a top speed of 250 km/h.
As a comparison, the Land Rover Defender has also had a V8 engine version before, but it was still a 5.0L V8 supercharged engine more than ten years ago. Although the displacement is larger, the maximum power is 525 horsepower, the maximum torque is 625 Nm, and the same 110 version, the whole vehicle 0-100 km/h acceleration time also needs 5.4 seconds, and the gap with BMW's N63 is not small.
It is worth mentioning that the N63 engine that German BMW gave to British Land Rover is not its strongest version. Currently, in the M Power series of high-performance cars, BMW has started to use its upgraded S63 engine, such as the M8, with a surface data of 625 horsepower/750 Nm, equipped with an 8AT gearbox and xDrive four-wheel drive system, and the thunder version can "break 100" in just 3.2 seconds.
From a technical level, BMW S63 adopts a more advanced dual-turbine system, with two channels on each turbine, and the crankshaft gives a turbine an exhaust wave every 180 degrees of rotation. That is to say, the two waste gas turbines in the middle of the cylinder angle, each can obtain an exhaust wave from both sides, while N63 adopts a "dual-turbine single-turbine tube," and each turbine can only obtain an exhaust wave from one side.
After BMW launched the S63, Mercedes-Benz's M178, Audi & Porsche's EA825 also started to adopt the top-mounted dual-turbine + dual-turbocharging technology, which has become the basic operation of high-performance V8 engines.
Facing the current trend of electrification, BMW also used a plug-in hybrid system in the new generation M5, the same S63 engine and 8AT gearbox, with a P2 layout single motor in the middle, with a total power of 727 horsepower, a maximum torque of 1000 Nm, limited by the light weight of the whole vehicle, the car 0-100 km/h acceleration needs 3.5 seconds, but the top speed has reached 306 km/h, which is even more fierce than the M8.
As the saying goes, "Teach the apprentice, no master." From the perspective of German BMW, British Land Rover is both a customer and a competitor, and naturally, it is impossible to give the most advanced things to the other party. Give you a basic model, and what level you can modify depends on your own skill.
