Innovation or "Cutting Corners"? The Debate Over Rapid Car Development
Jul 12, 2024
Traditionally, developing a new car model could take anywhere from 4 to 8 years, with some taking as long as 7 to 8 years. However, the current trend shows that this process can now be completed in just 2 to 3 years... Is this a sign of enhanced innovation capabilities or a case of "cutting corners"? Recently, two companies raised the same question during their respective product launches: Is developing a new car model in just 2 to 3 years akin to "harvesting leeks" (a metaphor for exploiting consumers)?
"The automotive industry is now very 'competitive,' competing on price, configuration, and traffic. As a test certifier, I believe we need to compete on the quality that is not visible to the eye," said Chu Weiping, an engineer at Pan Asia Automotive Technology Center, emphasizing that safety and reliability are the bottom lines to be adhered to.
Yang Zhonghua, a senior executive at Dongfeng Honda, pointed out on the same day of the new car launch, "Some new energy brands are hasty, cutting development cycles, lowering quality standards, and are eager to push assembled cars into the market, passing on hidden dangers to users, harvesting leeks."
According to incomplete statistics, there are 106 new energy vehicle models that are confirmed or ready to be launched in the domestic market this year, setting a record for the most in history. This means that on average, more than 8 models per month, or about 2 per week, are being introduced. Correspondingly, the development cycle for new energy vehicles is indeed shortening. Currently, some independent car companies have shortened the development cycle for new energy vehicle models to about 2 to 3 years, and some new car forces have compressed the development cycle for new cars to 9 to 12 months. Moreover, joint venture companies are also accelerating development.
The shortening of the new energy vehicle development process is due to the efforts of the manufacturers as well as the support of the industry chain enterprises.
Of course, while the application of new technologies has improved the efficiency of vehicle development, it is undeniable that some car companies have taken shortcuts, especially in the current context of "involution."
