China's First Soft-Top Convertible Electric Sports Car, Super Stylish!
Jul 03, 2024
MG Cyberster, crafted by SAIC Motor's global design team, has garnered the "Red Dot Design Award", "iF Design Award", and "G-Mark Good Design Award", making it a standout in the automotive design world. As a 2-door, 2-seater electric sports car, it's more than just a pretty face. Let's delve into the technical prowess of the MG Cyberster through a real car teardown.
The soft-top convertible design of the MG Cyberster is a significant part of its eye-catching appearance. The electric soft-top opens and closes in about 10 seconds, which is relatively fast among similar models. The combination of the soft-top and scissor doors is a unique offering in the market.
Cyberster's soft-top has been optimized to address common convertible issues such as high-speed noise and heat absorption, enhancing the user experience. According to the manufacturer, Cyberster achieves the highest torsional stiffness among convertibles at 17915N·m/deg, surpassing the initial design target of 15000N·m/deg.
As the world's first soft-top convertible electric sports car, the MG Cyberster features scissor doors and frameless side windows, presenting a visual feast while posing challenges for window sealing. Ensuring good sealing of the passenger compartment is key to cabin NVH performance, and the soft-top configuration poses significant challenges to the NVH engineering of the compartment.
MG Cyberster's front end is equipped with an aluminum front bumper and an energy-absorbing box with a crumple zone design. The front bumper features a "U" shaped cross-section, and the overall workmanship is robust. The front shock absorber upper mount between the two shock absorbers at the front of the car acts like a "top bar" commonly seen in modifications, further enhancing the overall rigidity of the front end and making the vehicle's steering response faster.
MG Cyberster is built on SAIC's Star Cloud platform, the same platform used by models like the Zhiji L7. The front suspension features a double wishbone independent front suspension, which is now quite common in high-end sedans of Chinese brands. The double ball joint design allows the front wheel's kingpin angle to adjust during high-speed cornering, optimizing tire contact with the road surface and increasing cornering speed.
MG Cyberster offers two powertrain options: rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The rear-wheel drive model is equipped with a single permanent magnet synchronous motor (model: TZ230XY1301) with a maximum power of 231kW/250kW. The all-wheel drive model has a front motor with a maximum power of 150kW (model: TZ180XS0951) and a rear motor with a maximum power of 250kW (model: TZ230XY1301). Both the front and rear motors are permanent magnet synchronous motors, with the front motor featuring a clutch to reduce drag loss when not driving the vehicle.
As a sports car, a low center of gravity and low seating position are essential for the MG Cyberster. To further lower the seating position, the car uses a relatively thin battery pack to make room for lowering the driver's seating position.
MG Cyberster's rear-wheel drive model accelerates from 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds, while the all-wheel drive model does it in 3.2 seconds, boasting impressive acceleration performance. Like many sports cars, the front and rear tire widths are different. The narrower front tires provide more agile steering performance, while the wider rear tires increase tire contact area, ensuring the motor's power is fully converted into vehicle acceleration and further enhancing the car's speed in corners.
As the world's first soft-top convertible electric sports car, the MG Cyberster's engineering design is tailored to its sports car positioning, reflecting the high compatibility and scalability of SAIC's Star Cloud platform. From the details revealed by the teardown, the MG Cyberster shows commendable performance in both materials and technical maturity. As a model that pays tribute to the MG brand's century-old racing history, it brings the brand's racing genes into the electric era. At this point in time, in the 300,000 RMB sports car market, the MG Cyberster has eye-catching technical strength.
